Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans)
- Best seller! Explodes with very large bright red flowers just as summer begins and continues blooming thru fall. If you are looking for a plant that guarantees hummingbirds - this is it. The little birds can not resist the huge, nectar rich flowers, and will dart in and out of the garden all day feeding on them. The leaves smell like pineapple/mint when rubbed and that means deer hate it! The edible flowers of pineapple sage are bright red in color and have a slightly sweet taste somewhat similar to mint. Flowers are used in vegetable salads and as a garnish for drinks and ice cream. Leaves are used in hot and cold tea beverages.
- Exposure/Soil: Full sun and moist soil.
- Grows to 30-36” tall. Dormant in winter.
I expected to receive tiny, fragile plants but instead received sturdy, healthy plants about 6 inches tall with a well-developed root system. They are now in the garden and looking great.
