Hosta 'Sum & Substance' (Hosta x 'Sum and Substance)
- Use:
- If you want a BIG hosta for your shade garden, Sum & Substance is a good choice. Each big, bold chartreuse gold colored leaf can get as much as 2 feet across on a plant that will eventually reach 6 feet wide, depending on conditions. If you want a specimen plant or conversation piece, Sum & Substance fits the bill. This hosta actually prefers a little more sun than others, place it where it will receive 3-6 hours of sun per day, avoiding hot, intense afternoon sun. Remember that deer love hostas, so if you have a herd of deer that visits on a regular basis, it is best not to tempt them with hostas. They make beautiful container plants for a shady patio, porch, etc. (picture is of a one year old plant, they get MUCH bigger with maturity so don't crowd this one)
- Exposure/Soil:
- Prepare the planting area well, its size requires plenty of organic matter to keep the over-sized leaves fed. Give it sun, but provide afternoon shade, especially in the south.
- Zones:
- 4-9
- Growth:
- 3 ft tall x 6 feet wide. Dormant in winter.
